Vehicle Pick up & Return
The operator of Compass Campers operates depots in
Depot Business Hours:
Monday to Saturday: 8:30 am - 5:00 pm (08:30 - 17:00) local time.
Sunday / Public Holidays: 8:30 am - 1:00 pm (08:30 - 13:00)
Please note that Compass Campers cannot accept any vehicle collections after 4:30pm (16.30) and 12.30pm on weekends / public holidays unless an after hours vehicle collection has been arranged.
There is a charge of NZ$60 for after hour’s vehicle collections. After hours vehicle collections are not available after 10.00pm and before 5.00am.Customers are advised to arrange for accommodation before and after travelling in New Zealand.
Please note: Please note if your plane is landing from 4.00pm onwards you will have to add an after hours pick up fee if you are hoping to rent the same day. It takes at least 30 – 45mins to clear customers so you will not be making it to our depot until after our normal pick up and drop off times.

If you spend the first night at a hotel near
After your arrival at the airport or your airport hotel, please ring us on our Freephone number, select 2 for Christchurch Transfers to organize your pick up and await our agent in front of the terminal or your hotel. Should no one be available, please take a taxi to our depot or book the Super-Shuttle. The cost of approx. NZ$20 will be refunded to you if a receipt is provided. If you are staying in the city, please take a taxi, the cost of approx. NZ$20 will be refunded to you if a receipt is provided.
Important Notice: The operator of Compass Campers does NOT recommend vehicle collections immediately after long-haul flights. Supplier advises that a minimum of 8hours rest is recommended to ensure safe travels. Please also note that afternoon collections may also face significant traffic congestion.
One Way Rentals
One way rentals are available between all branch locations at no extra charge but must be organised at time of booking.
Change of Pick Up or Return Location
A change of pick up or return destination is subject to availability. If the hirer wishes to change the pick up or return destination after the booking has been confirmed, they must obtain approval from the operator of Compass Campers. A breach of contract relating to pick up or return locations will incur a NZ$1000 penalty fee.
Returning Vehicles
Vehicles have to be returned on the date, place and time as shown on the contract. Late returns will result in extra charges. The hirer is obliged to return the vehicle:
- With a fuel level that is marked on the damage sheet
- In a reasonable clean condition.
- With empty holding tank and toilet
Extra charges apply should these obligations be ignored
Rental Charges
Rental charges for campervans / motorhomes & recreational vehicles are calculated on a daily basis, irrespective of pick-up time and include unlimited kilometers, all equipment and GST. There is a minimum rental period of 7 days. All prices are in
Payments
A non refundable booking deposit is required to secure your motorhome booking. The exact amount is detailed in the breakdown of pricing.
A second stage payment of $300 is taken shortly after booking confirmation as a separate transaction.
The remaining balance is due in full, 30 days before the commencement of hire.

After Hours Charge
Drivers Licence and Minimum Age
A valid national driver’s licence is required. National drivers’ licences, which are not in English, need to be presented in conjunction with an official translation or valid international drivers licence. The minimum driver age is 21 years.
Insurance
Compulsory Insurance: NZ$16.00 per day with an excess of NZ $1500 for drivers over 25 years (NZ$2000 for drivers of 21 to 24 years, GST Included). A credit card imprint is sufficient. Maximum charge of NZ$800 per hire
Standard Insurance Plus Tyre and Windowscreen Cover
NZ$22.00 per day,as per the above but with additional Tyre/Windscreen Cover. No excess applies to damaged tyres or windscreen. A credit card imprint for the bond is sufficient. Maximum charge NZ$1100 per hire.
All Inclusive Package (Full cover insurance and exrtras)
NZ$36.00 per day will reduce the excess for any vehicle to $250.00 ($500 for drivers 21 to 24 years). Covers all damages (including overhead& underbody damages), compulsory standard insurance and windscreen/tyre cover.This package also includes all 'Optional Extras'. Maximum charge $1800 per hire
Insurance Option 1: $36.00 per day will reduce the excess for any vehicle to $250.00 ($500 for drivers 21 to 24 years). This option includes standard insurance and windscreen/tyre cover. Maximum charge of $1800 per hire
Exclusions
Unless tyre and windscreen cover is purchased, the hirer will be fully liable for replacing or repairing damaged windscreens and tyres.
Security Bond
The security bond is equal to the excess amount under the insurance option chosen (see above). A credit card imprint is sufficient for these purposes. If paid in cash or by traveller cheque, the security bond will be refunded at the end of hire according to the conditions below.
Security Bond Refunds
The bond is will not be charged on return of the vehicle provided that:
- The vehicle is returned to the agreed location at the agreed time
- No damage is incurred to the vehicle or any 3rd party property
- Waste water tank and toilet have been emptied
- No items belonging to the operator of Compass Campers have been lost or damaged
- All traffic fines have been paid
- The vehicle is returned in a reasonably clean condition. The security bond can be paid by cash, traveller's cheque or credit card. If paying by credit card an imprint will be taken, but the account will not be debited if all of the above conditions are met.
Travel Insurance
In
Restricted Roads
All the vehicle must not be driven on Skippers Road (Queenstown), Ninety Mile Beach (Northland), Ball Hut Road (Mt. Cook) and North of Colville Township (Coromandel Peninsula). All other public roads are permitted throughout New Zealand.
Cancellation Fees
The initial deposit paid is non-refundable. In addition to forfeiting your deposit, the following charges also apply:
If cancelled 24 days prior to pick up: No further fee.
If cancelled within 24 days to 9 days of pick up 20% of total reservation cost.
If cancelled within 8 days of pick-up or no show 50% of total reservation cost
Early return of vehicle: No refund for any unused portion of the rental is available.
Rental Period Extension
A hire extension is subject to availability and authorisation by the operator of Compass Campers. Any costs associated with the extension will be disclosed prior to confirmation and charged on drop off.
On Road Assistance
In the event of mechanical problems, the hirer should contact supplier. The operator of Compass Campers help desk will direct you to the closest service center. (The phone number will be provided in your confirmation letter.)
Repair Approval
Repairs of up to NZ$50.00 can be completed without authorization by the operator of Compass Campers. All repair costs up to NZ$50 will be refunded upon submission of receipts. All repairs exceeding NZ$50.00 require approval by the operator of Compass Campers.
The operator of Compass Campers wishes to advise that no responsibility will be accepted for accommodation charges, meals or out-of-pocket expenses resulting from a breakdown. The operator of Compass Campers will accept liability (and may process appropriate refunds) where the vehicle was unusable due to mechanical failure and the hirer made reasonable effort to contact supplier within 12 hours.
Substitute Vehicles
The operator of Compass Campers reserves the right to substitute a comparable or superior vehicle at no extra cost. This shall not constitute a breach of contract and does not entitle the hirer to any refund. Should supplier not be able to supply a comparable vehicle, supplier will compensate the hirer for each day lost.
Privacy Policy
Any information supplied to the operator of Compass Campers will not be passed on to any other 3rd party. You have the right under New Zealand Privacy law to view and correct any information we hold about you.
Terms of booking on this website

The rates on this website are often heavily discounted. This is due to our negotiated rates and bulk buying power. On very rare occasions, a rate may be displayed incorrectly due to our, or a vehicle supplier's error. In such a case, if you book with us at a quoted rate that is incorrect, we will notify you of any price change and give you the option to proceed or cancel. We make every effort to keep information on our site up to date, but we cannot guarantee this website is free of errors or omissions and retain the right to update or change the information published at any time.
Liability
To the extent permitted by law we/the owners of this website will not be liable to you or to any third party (whether in contract, tort, or otherwise) for any direct, indirect or consequential loss or damage (including but not limited to any accident, injury, delay or loss of enjoyment) arising out of your reliance upon information contained on this website, including but not limited to your use (or inability to use) any products or services described or procured through this website.
When you pick up your vehicle, you will be required to sign a rental agreement with the supplier of the vehicle. Your rental and use of the vehicle will be governed by the terms of the rental agreement and any other documentation or information provided to you by the supplier at the time you pick up your vehicle. The rental agreement is between you and the supplier and we will not be liable to you or to any third party in relation to the terms of the supplier’s rental agreement or any other documentation provided to you by the supplier at the time of pick up.
While we will make reasonable efforts to ensure we are representing only reputable suppliers, we make no warranty about the fitness or suitability of any third party (supplier) product or service and will not accept responsibility for the quality or fitness of any vehicle. We welcome feedback from our customers on their experience with our suppliers. We may, at our discretion, provide you with reasonable assistance in resolving any dispute you may have with a supplier.
Our total liability to you in relation to your use of this website and the information contained on this website will not exceed the dollar amount of the deposit we have received from you in relation to your booking/rental. Refunds will not be made for bookings cancelled due to inclement weather. Again, we strongly recommend that you take out travel insurance. Your use of this website is governed by the laws of New Zealand and the jurisdiction of the New Zealand courts.
Booking information
To make a booking you must complete our booking form which is easy to follow and secured with the latest encryption technology. Once we receive your form, we will, subject to availability, confirm your booking by emailing you a confirmation voucher and invoice. The deposit required to secure your vehicle (as shown on the secure booking page) will only be processed on your credit card when your booking is confirmed. Please note that a 1.75% credit card charge will be added when your payment is processed.
A booking is confirmed when you have been emailed a confirmation voucher and at this stage the deposit is processed on your card and becomes non-refundable and any cancellation fees stated in the supplier's terms apply. Upon receipt of your confirmation, please check your details carefully and notify us immediately if there are any incorrect details, as it may not be possible to make changes at a later date.
If you are booking via phone, please make sure you have read the terms and conditions of the vehicle you wish to rent first. Our reservations consultant will ask you if you have read the terms and agree to them before proceeding. The onus is always on the renter to ensure they make themselves fully aware of the terms displayed on our website.
Information disclosure
In booking on this website you acknowledge that we disclose your information to your selected Supplier in order to provide the requested rental services.
Amendments
Please note that some suppliers treat an amendment as a new booking and apply the rate current at the time the amendment is made to recalculate the entire booking amount (not just the days changed). If the rental period is increased, an additional deposit may be required. If the rental period is shortened which results in a reduction of the rental charges, the deposit amount will remain unchanged, and the difference between the original and revised deposit is forfeited (it cannot be used towards remaining rental charges). To request a change to a confirmed booking, please use the alterations request link on your confirmation. Any alterations are subject to availability and the approval of the supplier. In addition to the alteration policy of the supplier stated in their terms, the following charges will apply:
Car rental alterations (all charges stated in local currency):
To change dates or times that result in a recalculation of rental rates, or to change vehicles or locations: 25.00
To add or remove extras to/from a confirmed booking: 10.00
Motorhome rental alterations (all charges stated in local currency):
To change dates or times that result in a recalculation of rental rates, or to change vehicles or locations: 75.00
To add or remove extras to/from confirmed booking: 20.00
The alteration fee will not be charged if your alteration request is not possible.
Vehicle Capacity and fitness to drive
Under no circumstances are you permitted to carry more passengers than the vehicle you rent is legally registered to carry, and if you do your insurance may be invalidated. The number of seatbelts (and passengers) is indicated next to each vehicle on this website. Luggage capacity where shown is an indication only and we will not be responsible should you be unable to fit your entire luggage into a vehicle. It is your responsibility to choose a journey that is within your capabilities. A vehicle supplier can refuse to rent a vehicle to any person who is in their opinion unfit to drive or does not meet eligibility requirements. In such circumstances we will have no further liability to you.
